Written against
- · Competition Act — misleading representations, drip pricing, substantiation
- · Consumer Protection Act, 2002 (Ontario)
- · Canada's Anti-Spam Legislation (CASL)
- · Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (federal)
1. Before you spend a dollar
- · Know your gross margin per sale — you cannot judge an ad without it
- · Break-even ROAS = 1 ÷ gross margin %. At 60% margin, break-even ROAS is 1.67
- · Pixel or conversions API installed and firing on view content, add to cart, initiate checkout and purchase
- · Landing page loads under 3 seconds on mobile and states the all-in price including HST treatment
- · Cookie/tracking consent notice and a privacy policy that discloses advertising pixels (PIPEDA)
2. Account structure
One ad set per audience. Three to five creatives per ad set. Do not edit a winning ad set — duplicate it.
| Campaign | Objective | Budget split | Purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
| Testing | Sales or leads | 20% | New creative, broad audience |
| Scaling | Sales | 60% | Proven winners only |
| Retargeting | Sales | 20% | Site visitors, video viewers, engagers, list |
3. Daily budget rules
- · Start each test ad set at 3–5× your target cost per acquisition per day
- · Do not touch anything for 72 hours or 50 link clicks, whichever comes first
- · Kill an ad at 3× target CPA spent with zero purchases
- · Scale by 20% every 3 days while ROAS holds above break-even + 30%
- · If ROAS drops below break-even for 3 consecutive days, revert to the last profitable budget
4. Creative testing method
- · Test one variable at a time: hook, angle, format, offer
- · Five hooks × one proven body beats five entirely different videos
- · Winning creative criteria: hook rate (3-second views ÷ impressions) above 25%, hold rate above 15%, cost per purchase at or under target
- · Refresh creative every 2–3 weeks or when frequency exceeds 2.5 on cold audiences
5. Canadian ad compliance
- · Advertise the all-in price. Mandatory fees revealed only at checkout can be drip pricing under the Competition Act
- · Every performance, savings, income or health claim must be substantiated before it runs
- · Sale and 'regular price' claims must be genuine — the ordinary selling price test applies
- · Testimonials must be real, current, and reflect typical results; disclose any material connection
- · Contests need full rules, an Ontario skill-testing question and no-purchase entry
- · Lead ads collecting personal information require a privacy policy link and a clear purpose statement; email follow-up needs CASL-compliant consent
6. Weekly review dashboard

| CPC | Spend ÷ link clicks | Category dependent |
| CVR | Purchases ÷ landing page views | >2% |
| ROAS | Revenue ÷ spend | > break-even + 30% |
| True CAC | Total spend ÷ new customers | < 30% of first-order margin |
